So now I’m fairly well settled in London. I traveled here in August 2016… a long process of two flights and a 12 hour stopover in Hong Kong. I’ve been shooting video while I’m here, but been so busy with work that I haven’t had time to put this first video together, plus it’s a long one. Future videos will be posted more frequently, and be shorter!
3 months ago, in April 2016, I had bariatric weight loss surgery. Specifically, I had a procedure known as an “Omega Loop” or “Mini Bypass”. Or, if you’re of a medical bent, it’s called a Single Anastomosis Gastric Bypass. Terminology aside, the original plan was for me to have a full gastric bypass, but once the surgeon got in there he had to make an on-the-fly decision to alter the op.
Note: Updated the video after, ironically, the first version had audio issues!
After battling neighbors with cherry pickers and a huge lack of time, I have uploaded the first of many YouTube videos – How to Remove Background Noise in Adobe Audition CC.
That’s right! I’m starting a YouTube Channel. I’ve wanted to for a while – I think I have a lot to share, and I have lots of ideas for videos. I’ve been gearing up for it – developing a channel trailer, setting up social media accounts, and getting hardware. I have a Canon 70D, so I’ve equipped this with a Rode VideoMic Pro (no, I’m not trying to copy Casey Neistat – it’s a coincidence!). I picked up on the sweet little GoPro Hero 4 Session cameras, and luckily I have a lot of experience with the whole Adobe suite.
Well, I survived! The surgery went very well and I’m at home recovering – in fact, I enjoyed the entire time I was in hospital. I decided to see it as an adventure. Most people look at hospitals with dread, I was fascinated by the processes, the other patients, the staff.
So now and again I decide I am tired of standard Hollywood fare, and decide to watch a movie from another stable. I’ll follow a director (I’m a big fan of auteur theory), or a genre, and I’ma fan of coming-of-age films, but often I’ll check out a foreign film. I don’t mind subtitles. It’s a small price to pay to see something completely different on screen. I like movies that are almost tone poems, that lose you in their imagery, and last night I checked out Concrete Night (Betoniyö) from 2013.
Among other things, I’m the CTO of a little website called The Stoner’s Cookbook. This month we released the first major site rebuild in years, and I wanted to post about the experience of building a WordPress theme from scratch. It’s a bit of a cathartic review of the process and illustrates the sort of issues you might deal with as a developer. I’m no expert, and might be (and am quite frequently) wrong, but it’s better to be wrong and learn something than think you’re right all the time.
I took some photos in Taranaki over the Christmas period – I grew up in South Taranaki, and headed down there to be with family.
These were taken on a Canon 70D. I’m new to this camera, so many of the settings were left at defaults. I will learn and improve!
The last couple of days were hectic for me as I responded to media requests for copies of the Ashley Madison data (they couldn’t or wouldn’t download the torrent themselves). It cost me a few USB sticks! Thereafter I was chased to explain how the files worked and take reporters etc through the data.
