I describe myself as a multipotentialite, because I’ve yet to find a neat box or category into which I can be installed. As a child the New Zealand Government sent people to test my I.Q. which was assessed at 156. This made dealing with normality difficult but meant I was always interested in a huge variety of subjects.
At Auckland University, I studied astrophysics, quantum physics, electronics, computer science, philosophy, Russian and film.
I also studied hypnosis in my spare time and used it to entertain people at parties.
At South Seas Film & Television School, I graduated as a director / editor and went to work at Television New Zealand as an editor.
After graduating, I went back to the school and taught classes in editing, DVD production, Flash animation and actionscript.
I’ve written and/or directed a number of short films.
I was 2nd Assistant Director on a horror feature shot in Hollywood.
I worked with Sir Peter Jackson’s team at Weta Digital in Wellington on the final Lord of the Rings film, Return of the King and I, Robot, doing F/X and render network stuff.
I once fell off a cliff, and that tale resulted in me winning a car on New Zealand’s version of Wheel of Fortune where I tried my best to make the host’s life difficult by using words like “erythrocyte” and “floccinaucinihilipilification”.
I played Bearded Guard in Xena: Warrior Princess – “A Solstice Carol”
I was a web developer for 20 years, starting an agency called Digitalus Ltd along with business partner Daniel Crothers. Our agency still manages the Asia/Pacific web presence for Hasbro, Inc. During this time I was a business coach and mentor for a number of high school business teams as part of New Zealand’s “Young Enterprise Scheme“. One team won the regional championships, the other (“Cool It”) won both the regional and national championships.
I was one of the founders and CTO of the web’s largest online cannabis community, HERB (formerly The Stoner’s Cookbook), which I started in 2006 along with a friend. We originally created the site as a joke – a place for stoners to upload their favourite munchie food – and three years after we created it, The Stoner’s Cookbook became the number one cannabis recipe site on the net. We rebranded it to HERB and aimed it at the U.S. market where legalization was taking off (advertisers in the U.S. didn’t like the word “stoner”) and it now has more than 10 million followers on Facebook.
The original 2006 site looked like this:
I co-wrote a cookbook: HERB: Mastering the Art of Cooking with Cannabis along with two professional cannabis chefs.
After the success of HERB I have the time to explore other opportunities such as learning to act!
In the last couple of years, I’ve lived and traveled in and around France. I’m studying and qualifying part-time in Machine learning / Artificial Intelligence / Deep Learning projects using TensorFlow and Python. Fun stuff like Convolutional Neural Networks, Recurrent Neural Networks and Generative Adversarial Networks. It’s so cool – I mean, look what AI can do already: Realtime Object Detection in Video I’m building a library that’s currently analysing the Harry Potter books and trying to generate “new” stories.
I have a YouTube Channel where I vlog and post videos – when I get time.
I’m involved in bitcoin and blockchain / cryptocurrency development and investment. I’m part of the Ecomi team, developing a new crypto currency and secure wallet, and also becoming a Smart Contract developer using Solidity.
I’m working on a number of iOS apps.
I made a short documentary about Swiss contact juggler Joseph Viatte.
I’m a business mentor and friends with a number of beatboxers in France, and I’m learning to beatbox (it’s hard).
I just finished the first draft of a sci-fi/drama YA novel I aim to turn into a screenplay.
In January 2018 I took the week-long Acting Event at The Reel Scene and it was life-changing. We worked with Shobu Kapoor (Bend it Like Beckham, Citizen Khan), Manpreet Bachu (Doctor Who, Humans), Manpreet Bambra and David Schaal (The Inbetweeners). Since then I’ve had the honour of working with these actors and others such as Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game, Journey’s End) through the Reel Scene.
I’m doing some networking here in London and wanting to get back into the industry, this time as a writer/director/actor. I’m working at The Reel Scene as their digital manager as well as being a student on their Screen Acting Year Course and Asa Butterfield Masterclass. I also write scenes for the one week course students to perform.
